When an Angel Comes to You
Learn more about song written for a friend with cancer.
Sometimes an act of creativity can help encourage someone going through the dark days of a cancer journey.
That’s what happened when Susanne Bielfeldt decided to write a song for a friend who has been facing colon cancer.
Inspiration for the song
Her friend, named Craig, told her about how one of the greatest challenges of facing cancer and being hospitalized for several days were the long and lonely nights.
One morning, while drinking her coffee and thinking of Craig and his family, she wrote a song called, “When an Angel Comes to You.”
The lyrics flowed, and later she put it to music and shared the song with Craig to encourage him.
“My friend had told me about his lonely nights in the hospital where fear just overwhelmed him, and all he could do was to hope and to wait for a miracle,” said Susanne. “Angels are real and I thought it would be a great way to encourage him.”
WHEN AN ANGEL COMES TO YOU
Knowing how much I can give
Holding on tight, waiting to live
The fear that conquers me through the night
But an Angel is holding me tight
Takes me in its loving arms
Keeping me safe from all daily harms
With all the love that flows onto me
Dreaming with the stars I see
There’s a miracle for you
Making all your hopes come true
When your soul is hurt and weak
There is no greater love to seek
There’s an Angel on its way
Taking pain and fears away
There’s no greater love so true
When an Angel comes to you
Go surrender to his loving wings
And soothe your soul from all hurtful things
Just trust its overflowing love
Heaven guides you from up above
Good night sweet soul, so now I am there
I am your Angel with love and with care
You can’t see me but you can always trust my wing
You can hear me when I sing
Angels are real, the message is true
Open your heart, and they will come to you

A note about angels
Angels are created beings that are mysterious and can often be misunderstood. Here are a few Christian beliefs about angels, based on the Bible:
-
Angels are created beings.
They are not eternal or divine but serve God’s purposes. See Colossians 1:16 and Psalm 148:2,5.
-
Angels are ministers and messengers.
Angels are seen primarily as messengers and servants of God, protecting believers and executing God’s will and sharing his word (Hebrews 1:14, Psalm 91:11).
-
God is to be worshipped, not angels.
Consistent with biblical teaching, Christians emphasize that angels are not to be worshipped or prayed to. Worship belongs to God alone (Revelation 22:8-9). We are to ask him for help. Part of his answer to prayer might be sending angels, but God gets the glory in the end.
Angels are an important, albeit mysterious, part of the Christian experience for praying and asking God for help and hope.
The rest of Susanne’s story
Eventually Susanne’s friend, Craig, was released from the hospital. He loved the song and cries every time he hears it, as it reminds of his experience, as well as his gratitude for healing from those dark days.
Help with encouragement
Susanne’s story of encouraging her friend is heartwarming. While you may not have the desire or skill to write someone a song or poem, there are many ways that you can show love to someone going through cancer. For more on this topic, see this article.
However you seek to help your friend, know they will appreciate it!
