During times of desperation and trouble, we might ask the question, “Why me, Lord?” like the legendary country western star Kris Kristofferson wrote in his famous song.

When going through cancer or other difficult experiences, it can be natural to ask this, perhaps wondering why we are seemingly being singled out for pain. The question itself carries frustration, doubt, or even accusation toward God.

Flipping the meaning of the question

Yet, Kristofferson takes this question and flips the meaning on its head.

His question in the song, “Why Me Lord” isn’t asked from a place of bitterness but from a place of astonished gratitude.

Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I’ve known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving You
Or the kindness You’ve shown

He’s essentially saying:

“Why would someone like me—flawed, selfish, undeserving—be shown mercy, love, or blessing at all?”

The story behind the song

Around the time of writing this song, Kristofferson was massively successful, but living the alcohol-soaked, drug-tolerant lifestyle of the music scene. When his close friend, Janis Joplin, died of an overdose of heroin, Kris was shaken, entering a time of depression and guilt—grief for his friend, but also remorse for the hurt and pain he had caused his family and friends from his own mistakes.

He had just finished a performance with co-star Connie Smith when she invited him to hear pastor Jimmy Snow at the Evangelical Temple Church in Nashville. Though not a church goer, he accepted.

Later, following his moving message of repentance and forgiveness, Snow asked those in need to come forward. Kristofferson thought to himself, “I’m not doing that” but a moment later found himself walking to the front and kneeling, as if on autopilot.

He wept aloud, overwhelmed by the burden of guilt for hurting his family, friends, and others. Then, in a moment he describes as “a profound religious experience,” he felt a powerful sense of forgiveness and release.

He began writing “Why me, Lord?” immediately after the service. His inspiring melody was released in 1972 on the album, “Jesus Was a Capricorn,” and quickly became successful.

“Why me, Lord, what have I ever done…”

You’ll see both used, but on albums, charts, and songwriting credits, Kris Kristofferson titled it simply “Why Me.” The dual naming actually fits the song well—it’s become almost inseparable from its prayer-like refrain.

Enduring popularity

The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in 1973, and was later covered by artists including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and George Jones, which has kept the song in the public eye for generations.

Why is it so popular? The song taps into some deep-seated desires for forgiveness and redemption, which is a universal cry of the human heart.
